DENTAL SERVICES
At Stirling Street Dental Clinic, we take the time to understand your child's needs. We know that dental fear starts in childhood, specifically during the first visit.
Most parents consult our children's dentist at our Perth clinic regarding their children's oral health. We want to make it a positive experience for parents too. We'll take the time to sit with you and discuss any concerns or issues you may have.
Why choose Stirling Street Dental?
Our experienced team has specialist knowledge in children's psychology, dental development, and growth - so we know how to make even nervous children feel at ease. We treat children of all needs, including those with developmental disabilities, sensory sensitivities, or anxiety around dental visits.
We also include fissure sealants and fluoride treatments as part of our preventive approach, helping to protect your child's teeth against decay from an early age.

Start early with preventative oral health
While our professional team can take care of all of your dentistry needs, prevention is the best course of action. Early education on healthy eating and tooth-cleaning habits alongside regular dental visits can help achieve a lifetime of good dental health. We recommend booking an appointment with your dentist every six months for a complete checkup and clean.
The first dental appointment
Once your child's baby teeth have come through, they are ready for their first dental checkup. The first dental visit should take place no later than their first year. Bring your child to Stirling Street Dental Clinic six months after their first tooth erupts. This is to determine the type of care suitable for their dental condition.
Our dentist will check for any signs of tooth decay or other issues during your appointment. X-rays may also be taken for a more detailed examination. Your dentist will then be able to monitor your development and advise on how to care for your growing teeth properly. Your dentists may also clean their teeth depending on your child's needs.
Starting children's dentistry at a young age helps get them comfortable with dental treatments. The friendly team at Stirling Street Dental perform gentle yet effective treatments so that children can start strong in a warm, relaxed environment.
What to expect during your child's first dental visit
Knowing what to expect helps both parents and children feel calm and confident. Here's what happens at your child's first dental appointment at Stirling Street Dental:
- Preparing your child: Talk about the visit in a positive, upbeat way beforehand. Reading books about the dentist or watching short videos can help reduce anxiety. Try to schedule the appointment when your child is well-rested and fed.
- During the appointment: Your dentist will gently examine your child's teeth, gums, and jaw. Depending on your child's age and needs, we may clean their teeth and apply fluoride to strengthen enamel. We will also review any concerns you have about your child's dental development.
- After the visit: We will provide personalised oral hygiene tips for your child and recommend when to book their next check-up. We always make time to answer your questions.
Helping children clean their teeth
To ensure your child has a healthy smile, encourage healthy habits in their oral health routine. Lead by example, showing them how to brush and floss your teeth at least twice each day, spending at least two minutes making sure your mouth is clean.
The right timing to start brushing your child's teeth will vary depending on their needs and development. Once your child is 18 months old, you can brush their teeth with a suitably sized brush and low-fluoride toothpaste. Then, when they are around 2½ years old, you can start to floss your child's teeth to remove decay-causing bacteria gently. Generally, children can begin to brush their teeth unsupervised once they are between 8 - 10 years old

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Baby teeth (also known as primary teeth) are just as important as adult teeth. They hold space for permanent teeth, support speech development, and allow your child to chew properly. If baby teeth decay or are lost too early, it can affect the alignment of adult teeth as they come through.
At Stirling Street Dental, we recommend bringing your child in for their first check-up when their first tooth appears or by age one, and then every six months from there.
Dental anxiety in children is very common and nothing to worry about. At Stirling Street Dental, we specialise in helping nervous children feel safe and comfortable.
Before the visit, talk about the dentist in a calm and positive way - avoid using words like 'hurt' or 'needle'. Role-playing at home and reading books about the dentist can also help. During the appointment, our team uses a gentle, go-at-your-own-pace approach. Bringing a favourite toy or comfort item is always welcome. We never rush and always explain each step before we do anything.
